C12 · PRACTICE GUIDE
Retention & Renewal
Prepare for continuation throughout the relationship, using value and commercial evidence.
Renewal is a commercial event supported by ongoing customer value, fit and trust. Start readiness early enough for the customer's procurement, budget and decision process. A contract renewal alone does not prove that the customer achieved success.
Put it into practice
Record contract dates, notice periods, decision stakeholders and procurement requirements at the start of the relationship.
Review value evidence, adoption, unresolved risks and future priorities throughout delivery. Assign a renewal owner separate from assumptions about CSM authority.
Confirm the decision path and terms through authorized commercial roles. If continuation is unsuitable, manage a clear and respectful exit.
What good evidence looks like
A renewal-readiness record with decision process, value evidence, risk actions and accountable commercial owner.
WATCH FOR
A common failure mode
Waiting until the final contract period to discover dissatisfaction or treating a positive health score as a committed renewal.
What to measure
Gross revenue retention and customer retention by cohort, with reasons for losses and contraction.
